OPUS KINK
Thursday August 28th

Welcome to the pit of joy! With their ever-mutating brand of jazz-and-country-laced punk, Opus Kink cut a singular figure in a saturated landscape. Making their name with incendiary, cult-like live shows, the band - formed in Brighton (UK) in 2017 - have developed a sound as elusive as it is recognisable, careening from tarantella (St Paul of The Tarantulas) to pounding death-disco (This Train) to music hall (Dust) to menacing, sluggish dirge (Malarkey). Underscored by their signature formidable horn section and ragged, sardonic delivery, the band bear passing resemblance to post-punk and no-wave acts like The Pop Group, Birthday Party and Lounge Lizards, but it’s the weaving of older, more traditional influences - choral, folk, country, Latin, Weimar cabaret, cruise-ship-crooner - into the fabric of their music that sets them apart. Through their songs concerning violence, evil, shame, troubled sexual politics, anxiety and emptiness, all served with a wry absurdist bent, Opus Kink craft an alluring nether-world for their increasingly voracious audiences to plunge into.

"Horn-fuelled filth-funk, where punk and jazz combine in grimy circumstances” (Thomas Smith, NME Magazine)
“Barnstorming, infectious” (Steve Lamacq, BBC 6 Music)
"One of the most enjoyable genre fusions I've ever seen" (Nels Hylton, BBC Radio 1)
"Always at the peril of derailing but somehow still in control – the adrenaline rush that comes from both situations is addictive" (Jamie Muir, DORK)
“A showdown to end all perception of genre... wearing their influences on their sleeves then ripping them to shreds” (Al Mills, So Young Magazine)
“A raucous, intense blast of guitar pop” (Robin Murray, Clash Magazine)
